On 24-25 March 2017, the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) held its annual General Assembly and Conference in Salamanca (Spain). The Universidad de Salamanca, together with the MCAA’s Spain-Portugal Chapter, was hosting the meeting, since the Chapter’s outgoing chair Luis Sanz Andréu teaches at Salamanca. On 26 March 2017, the Spain-Portugal Chapter held its own annual meeting, and in the afternoon chapter members had the opportunity to present their research projects to their colleagues. The lightening-talk format was set at eight minutes, with a maximum of three slides, for a summary in simple terms, straight to the point and comprehensible to all fields. As conventional wisdom holds that an average elevator ride takes between thirty seconds and two minutes, an eight-minute presentation could be considered the long version of an elevator pitch.
