Welcome to 2019 Spring Class | Tips on Making Appointments and Accessing Resources

The Office of Career Services and Leadership Management would like to extend a warm welcome to our new class of students! We look forward to working with you and supporting your career journey throughout your time at CSSW and thereafter. See below for a recap of the resources that were discussed during Orientation.

Career Connect / Appointments

  • Career Connect is your go-to career management tool that you can use to schedule appointments, explore opportunities, and access various career resources, including GoinGlobal, a comprehensive, global career guide. Please bookmark the link for future use: https://candidate.gradleaders.com/ColumbiaSW/Candidates/Login.aspx?pid=3455.
  • To begin using the system, please refer to the welcome email titled “Welcome to Career Connect” that was sent to your Columbia email. It will include a link to the site. Your username is your UNI (e.g. abc123). You will have to set up your new password and fill out your profile to enjoy all its features.
  • To schedule an appointment, go to Advising > General Advising, and choose a time that’s convenient for you. If you prefer a phone or virtual appointment, make sure to note it accordingly in the request. Please note that this advising feature will not be visible to you until you fill out the required fields of your profile.
  • You may also “drop in” without an appointment, Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, unless otherwise noted, including this week. (Drop-ins will be available again starting next week.) Students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis for brief 10 to 15-minute meetings.

Spring Calendar

All upcoming events and activities will be posted in Career Connect in the Events section, as well as on the Career Services Blog Events page. They will also be announced via email and in our weekly enews. Note that “Company Events” are primarily employer-related activities (e.g. recruitment sessions.) “Workshops” include career and professional development training as well as talks and panels with alumni and other professionals in the field.

Most CSSW-based events will take place Tuesdays through Thursdays during the afternoon breaks. Please make sure to register for each event directly using Career Connect or the links provided within the system. This will allow the career team to anticipate how many to expect and plan accordingly with employer and alumni guests.

Career Strategies for the New Year

Happy New Year!

While any time is a good time for setting new goals and habits, the start of a new year always presents a great opportunity to implement new resolutions.

One easy-to-implement resolution, whether you’re interning or working in a full-time role, is to keep a regular journal of your personal and professional accomplishments. This is not only an effective way to track your progress toward your goals but also to tangibly reflect on your successes, challenges, and growth and identify next steps.

You can use the traditional pen-to-paper method or try one of the many free journaling apps available. Journal entries are most useful when they include:

  • Specific details about a situation, project, or challenge you faced (including who, what, and when)
  • Skills you used or actions you took to address it
  • Results you achieved or impact you had

Sound familiar? These are the core elements of resumes and interviews. They’re also great to discuss in performance reviews. Not sure where to start? Schedule an appointment with the career team today!

Social Work Legislative Education and Advocacy Day (LEAD) | Tuesday, March 5, 2019

The New York State Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-NYS), the New York State Social Work Education Association (NYSSWEA), and the New York State Deans of Schools of Social Work is hosting the annual Social Work Legislative Education and Advocacy Day (LEAD) at the Capitol in Albany, NY on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

LEAD is a legislative event that brings hundreds of social work students and professionals to the NYS Capitol. The goal of this event is to further social workers’ knowledge about policy issues in substantive areas of social work practice, teach participants about legislative advocacy, and provide an opportunity for social workers to lobby on behalf of specific legislation.

The two issues they will be advocating for this year are:

– New York State Dream Act
– Social Work Investment Initiative (#investinsocialwork)

What to Expect

LEAD is open to both social work students and professionals. Attendees will visit their legislators throughout the day via legislative appointments or blanket canvassing to advocate for our issues. Attendees may also opt to serve as group leaders, responsible for leading the assigned meetings with legislators. Information, updates, and resources pertaining to 2019 LEAD will be emailed DIRECTLY to your email address. As such, please ensure your email address is correctly filled out when registering.

Click here to register for 2019 LEAD on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.
