NASW-NYC Honors Social Work Month 2021 with Event Series

The NASW-NYC Chapter is proud to announce the first NASW-NYC Social Work Month Series:

Committed to promoting the value and visibility of the social work profession and enhancing the profession’s credibility and influence at state and local levels, the NASW-NYC has designed various events over the course of the month that speak to the scope of social work.

This Social Work Month series is designed to offer opportunities for engagement, networking, learning, and more to social workers across the five boroughs, reminding us all of the essential importance of social workers and exemplifying the 2021 Social Work Month theme of NASW. In the era of COVID-19 and the changes and issues it has brought, this series hopes to encourage and support our NYC social workers.

The series is FREE (unless otherwise indicated) and open to all social workers of all levels and fields, including students.

WEEK ONE of the Social Work Month Series includes L.E.A.D and a FREE CE Opportunity with the NYC Commission on Human Rights worth 2 CE Contact Hours!

Free SAMHSA Training: How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice System Responses

Application deadline: Friday, February 21, 2020

Are you an experienced trainer interested in developing your capacity to provide trauma-informed training to your local agencies and community? The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) GAINS Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation has a free training just for you!

“How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice System Responses” is a train-the-trainer event designed for community-based criminal justice system professionals such as law enforcement, community corrections (probation, parole, and pretrial services), court personnel, and human service providers that serve adult justice-involved populations. While not a requirement to apply, this year’s training events will place special emphasis during the selection process on applicants who provide training to drug courts and/or re-entry programs.

When applying, you can choose from three two-day training events in 2020, all of which will be held at the Sage Colleges in Albany, New York:

  • June 10-11
  • July 22-23
  • August 12-13

While selected applicants must cover their own travel expenses, there are no fees for registration, tuition, materials, or follow-up technical assistance and support associated with the event.

About Ashleigh

Ashleigh Washington is currently the Senior Director of Learning and Staff Development at Safe Horizon, the nation’s leading victims services agency. She leads training and professional development for the agency’s 900+ employees.

Her talent for innovation and strategic leadership has driven her experiences in the field of social work over the last 13 years. Ashleigh has also worked in the fields of substance abuse, public education, healthcare, and supportive housing, providing both direct practice and management in the non-profit sector.

Ashleigh holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Prairie View A&M University in Texas, and a master’s in social work from Columbia University. She is currently a Ph.D. student in social welfare at the City University of New York.

About the Presenter

Josie M. Rosario, LMSW ’19, MSEd is an NYC-based therapist, who helps individuals and couples improve their self and relational awareness while supporting their journey towards feeling whole and being well. As the founder of the Healing Strategy, a brand and marketing consultancy for therapists, she supports private practice clinicians increase their visibility and impact. Josie splits her time between private practice, leading the Healing Strategy, and a mental health clinic.

Josie earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University, a master’s degree in education from Hunter College, and graduated with distinction from Columbia University’s School of Social Work. Josie was an early participant of Business Essentials at Harvard Business School and the Columbia Entrepreneurship Design Studio. She is also a trainee in family and couples therapy at the Ackerman Institute for the Family.

Josie is a native New Yorker, a proud Black Dominican-American woman, a die-hard Golden Girls fan, and deeply committed to continuing to manifest her ancestors’ wildest, most fiercest dreams.

Department of Health-Sponsored Scholarships for Professional Development Trainings

From the Outreach Training Institute:

With funding from the NYS Department of Health’s Workforce Retraining Initiative,Outreach Training Institute is accepting applications for full scholarships for health workers interested in being trained in the following evidence-based practices: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Overview and Applications in Substance Abuse Treatment.
These courses provide continuing education hours for CASACs, Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, and Marriage & Family Therapists!
Eligibility for scholarships include the county in which applicants are employed. Applicants must be employed in a healthcare facility* located in an eligible county. For a snapshot, please view the chart below.

Their 4-hour SBIRT trainings in September at both locations are happening soon – apply early!
