Kraft Global Fellows | Istanbul 2020

The Kraft Global Fellows Program is an initiative of the Kraft Family Fund for Intercultural and Interfaith Awareness and the Office of the University Chaplain. Applications are now being accepted for the January 2020 Kraft Global Fellows research trip to Turkey and the Columbia Global Center | Istanbul. The group research project will focus on the religions, cultures, and communities of Istanbul. The project is designed and directed by Jewelnel Davis, University Chaplain, and Associate Provost.

Funding for the program is from the Kraft Family Fund for Interfaith and Intercultural Awareness and the Office of University Chaplain; covered expenses include round trip airfare from NYC-JFK to Istanbul and return to NYC-JFK and lodging. Students must have a current passport that will not expire before June 2020. Dates of the trip are Jan 02 through Jan 11th, 2020. Students will travel together to and from NYC.

Tamer Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship Program Open for Applications!

Are you working at an organization with social or environmental value this summer? You may be eligible for the Tamer Center Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship Program!

The Tamer Center for Social Enterprise provides financial support to graduate students engaged in summer internships with social and environmental value. You may be eligible to apply if:

  • You are a non-graduating student (currently in year 1 or 2 of a graduate program )
  • You will be working at a social venture or a social or environmental entrepreneurship-focused organization which is less than 7 years old (or solely dedicated to social enterprise)
  • Your internship is 6-10 weeks long, full-time, and concludes on or about August 31

So You Attended the MSW Job Fair — Now What?

Kudos to those who braved the crowds to meet and connect with employers at last week’s MSW Job Fair! We hope you were able to walk away with valuable information about potential opportunities you could pursue post-graduation. Here are a few follow-up steps to take, now that the fair is over:

  • Get organized. Jot down what you learned about your target organizations, including recruiter contact information (if provided), open opportunities, and sought after skills and attributes not explicitly stated on their websites.
  • Update your marketing material. Incorporate information and feedback you received from the recruiters, and ensure that your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile reflect the qualifications they’re seeking.
  • Follow up. Did the recruiters ask you to send them your resume or submit your application online? Make sure to do so and also send a follow-up email to thank them for their time and to reiterate your interest. You can also try to connect with them on LinkedIn. (NOTE: Not all recruiters accept requests.)
  • Reflect on the experience. Take a moment to assess how you think you managed the experience. Did you feel prepared? What did you do well? What could you have done better? For tips on improving for the future, feel free to schedule an appointment with the Career Services team.
  • Keep the momentum going. Job fairs are a great way to make connections and learn about openings, but your search should not end there. Take advantage of on- and off-campus recruitment events, including the Site Visit to Fresnius Kidney Care on March 29, and networking opportunities, such as the Networking Night at the Columbia Club on April 4, to gain additional leads and insights.

Philanthropy New York’s Public Policy Fellowship Information Session | Tuesday, February 12 + Open House | Wednesday, February 27

Interested in philanthropy? Consider applying for Philanthropy New York’s Public Policy Fellowship, a two-year, full-time employment opportunity for candidates who are committed to deepening racial equity practices in the sector.

Philanthropy New York is a membership association of approximately 280+ private, corporate, family and public grantmaking organizations based in the New York City region that provides a broad range of services to over 3,500 individual philanthropic professionals and trustees of those organizations.

The Public Policy Fellowship is designed to support the organization’s commitment to building diversity and equity in the philanthropic field and increase their organization’s capacity to work with their membership. Fellows facilitate issue-based working groups, develop and execute programs on current issues in the field, curate content for their media platforms, and write insightful reports and publications.

This opportunity is open to diverse candidates completing their master’s program this spring or who have recently graduated (May 2017 or more recent).

Public Policy Fellowship Open House

Philanthropy NY will also be hosting a night of networking with staff, sector professionals, including from WT Grant Foundation, New York State Health Foundation, Arbor Brothers, and Ford Foundation, and like-minded peers, on Wednesday, February 27, 4:00 to 6:00 pm EST at their offices at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice on 320 East 43rd Street. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the philanthropic sector, careers in the field, and the fellowship from the perspective of the members they serve.

Dr. James A. and Jill Lipton Fellowship for Interprofessional Oral Health, Social Work, and Sociomedical Sciences Summer Research

The “Dr. James and Jill Lipton Fellowship for Interprofessional Research in Oral Health, Social Work, and Sociomedical Sciences,” provides stipends for outstanding summer research projects informed by the socio-medical/dental/social work sciences.

It seeks to support projects involving the psychosocial-cultural aspects of oral health care delivery.

An interprofessional team of 2019 Lipton fellows will be recruited to contribute to – and to continue – a Lipton research project begun in 2018.

A team of 2-3 students will be selected to carry out this project during the summer of 2019.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible applicants must be:

  • first or second year students currently enrolled in the College of Dental Medicine,
  • first-year students at the Columbia School of Social Work, or
  • first-year students in Sociomedical Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM) will administer the program.

Award Information

Fellows will receive a stipend of $2,500 intended to cover living expenses.

Program and Participation

Fellows are expected to work collaboratively on their project full-time during regular business hours for the entire period of support during the summer of 2019.

Fellows cannot undertake clinic or other school obligations in this period.

Application Requirements and Process

Students must complete and submit a 2019 Lipton Research Fellowship Application. An application and instructions will be provided at the Info Session.

An information session will be held at Columbia University School of Social Work on 1/23/19 at 12pm, during which collaborative-team based research involving the three disciplines will be discussed.

Potential mentors and advisors will be in attendance.  The summer project description and progress to date will be presented.

Professor Zhao from Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) Shares Insights on Social Work Education and Career Paths in China

The Office of Career Services and Leadership Management, in partnership with the China Center for Social Policy, were pleased to welcome Professor Liqin Zhao, Department Chair of Social Work, College of Humanities and Social Sciences of Beijing University of Technology (BJUT), to lead a presentation on social work education and career paths in China. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the evolution of social work education, the growing demand for social workers with the rise of social and economic changes in China, and the various opportunities and career paths they can pursue.

Thank you to Professor Zhao and the entire delegation from BJUT, including Deputy Dean Jianguo Hu, Yuzhou Xing, Faculty Member, and Chenting Song, Faculty Member, for joining us, as well as CSSW Professor Qin Gao, Director of the China Center for Social Policy for coordinating the presentation.
