Deliberate Resistance: LGBT Prisoner Rights 20 Years After Farmer v. Brennan
November 14, 2014 @ 8:30 am - 7:00 pm
Free
Join us for a day of strategic discussion about criminal justice policy and practice as it affects LGBT people in prisons, jails, and immigration detention facilities.
In 1994, the US Supreme Court upheld the right of prisoners to hold prison officials accountable for “deliberate indifference” to their safety. The case was brought by Dee Farmer, a transgender prisoner who experienced assault and abuse because of her gender identity. We commemorate Dee Farmer and all incarcerated persons who are resisting abusive and discriminatory practices in detention.
Free and open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Sponsored by the Center for Gender, Sexuality and Law at Columbia Law School.
Co-sponsored by the ACLU, Just Detention International, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.
RSVP is strongly encouraged, but not required.
