SUMMARY:Deliberate Resistance: LGBT Prisoner Rights 20 Years After Farmer v. Brennan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of strategic discussion about criminal justice policy and practice as it affects LGBT people in prisons\, jails\, and immigration detention facilities. \nIn 1994\, the US Supreme Court upheld the right of  prisoners to hold prison officials accountable for “deliberate indifference” to their safety. The case was brought by Dee Farmer\, a transgender prisoner who experienced assault and abuse because of her gender identity. We commemorate Dee Farmer and all incarcerated persons who are resisting abusive and discriminatory practices in detention. \n  \nFree and open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. \nSponsored by the Center for Gender\, Sexuality and Law at Columbia Law School. \nCo-sponsored by the ACLU\, Just Detention International\, and the National Center for Transgender Equality. \nRSVP is strongly encouraged\, but not required. \nConference Program (subject to change) \nFull list of speakers and biographies \n
