Culture of Violence: Examining Harmful Juvenile Justice Practices on Rikers Island

The Columbia Prison Reform and Education Project will be hosting a teach-in on the treatment of youth on Rikers Island, the main jail complex in NYC. We will discuss punitive measures like solitary confinement, as well as movements like the Raise the Age Campaign which aims to end the practice of trying many minors as adults. The event will start with a panel discussion followed by breakout groups for more in-depth discussion of each topic led by the speakers and fellow students.
