P2PH Academy event with Rebecca Peters on Gun control
February 4, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Dear Academy Members,
Please join us on Thursday, February 4th, 1:30-3:00pm, for a discussion with Rebecca Peters, who served as Director of the Australian anti-gun violence NGO International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) from 2002 to 2010. As chair of the National Coalition for Gun Control at the time of the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, Peters played a key role in the introduction of stricter gun control in Australia, an area in which she remains active today. Her research and advocacy helped bring about sweeping changes, including a move towards uniform gun laws across Australia, a ban on semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, and a year-long buyback that destroyed nearly 700,000 weapons. Peters received the 1996 Australian Human Rights Medal for her contribution to researching, educating and lobbying for gun law reforms in Australia.
Rebecca Peters will be available for an informal “Meet and Greet” starting at 12.30pm. The event will take place in Room 33 in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, on the 6th Floor of the New Building at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street – make a right after security, elevator to the 6th floor, the Interdisciplinary Studies Department will be on your right).
Please RSVP to this email if you wish to attend.
