Education is one of the most powerful ways that justice-involved youth and adults can shift the script and take back our lives.
In an era of mass incarceration, lack of educational access is a key factor in our nation’s prison build-up. People affected by the criminal justice system are more likely to come from racially segregated neighborhoods with failing and under-resourced schools. Quality education coupled with support services for justice-involved people has proven to be life-changing.
Education in corrections and reentry not only changes lives, it develops leaders and breaks the cycle of poverty and re-incarceration.
During this symposium, we will explore the power of education to change the lives of youth and adults with histories of justice-system involvement. With personal experience as our starting point, we will locate how and why education reclaims lives and cultivates leaders. From that base, together we will identify barriers to education as well as opportunities to overcome challenges and take action to expand transformational educational outcomes for justice involved students.
Who is invited?
Students and alumni with histories of justice involvement, along with other students, educators, reentry/education program staff, advocates, policy makers and anyone who believes that access to education should be at the heart of efforts to re-envision the criminal justice system in the United States.
The symposium is free. Lunch will be served.
