Meeting on October 1, 2015

Time: 4:00–6:00pm

Location: Dodge Room 620 on Columbia’s Morningside Campus

Discussion Prompt:

How do you practice improvisation in your domain of expertise?

Improvisation may be on-the-fly, in real-time, spontaneous, etc., but it is also predicated on some kind of prior knowledge. That prior knowledge needs to be acquired and rehearsed, perhaps in a particular way. In what way is this knowledge acquired and rehearsed? What are its physical, mental, and technological correlates? During this first meeting, we hope to compare practice methods from different domains of improvisation, and explore what it means to practice improvising.
