Event-Driven Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Event-Driven Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), AKA Truvada and Descovy, refers to the use of antiretroviral medications as prevention for people who do not have HIV but might be at increased risk of HIV exposure. PrEP is most frequently prescribed as a daily medication, but new guidelines include the use of PrEP “on-demand” (AKA event-driven PrEP, intermittent PrEP, 2-1-1 PrEP).

Event-driven PrEP consists of 2 tablets 2-24 hours before sex, followed by one additional tablet 24 and 48 hours after sex. Scroll down for an interactive module and Event-Driven PrEP Calculators.

This dosing schedule is most appropriate for patients with episodic sexual HIV risk. Patients other than cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) should not be considered for event-driven PrEP.
