Dr. Zweben has had extensive experience in training social workers, nurses, physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists and students from a variety of disciplines in motivational interviewing. He played a key role in developing and testing motivational enhancement therapy (MET) an approach that has been widely utilized in the mental health and substance use fields. Dr. Zweben has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since its inception.

Description: The presentation will show how motivational interviewing, an evidenced-based intervention, can be adapted to address diverse issues encountered by individuals struggling with the coronavirus.  Such issues may involve adhering to restrictions associated with exposure, social distancing, social isolation, substance use and related mental health difficulties.

Objectives:
By attending the session, participants will
(1) understand and manage challenging dialogues in forging a working alliance with vulnerable populations
(2) learn how to activate individual capabilities and coping resources for facilitating motivational change
(3) learn how “MI Spirit” can be integrated into an array of interventions that are employed with
vulnerable groups
