Part of a lecture series for the exhibition Dürer, Rembrandt, Tiepolo: The Jansma Master Print Collection from the Grand Rapids Art Museum

Though often regarded as merely a passive follower of his father Giambatista Tiepolo’s art, Giandomenico in fact innovated in his own right. Nowhere does this surface better than in his series of almost two dozen engravings on the story of the holy family’s Flight into Egypt. Altering a subject whose dramatic possibilities were almost downplayed in the history of painting, Giandomenico instead emphasized the wonder inherent in travel, the risks Mary and Joseph faced in protecting their infant son and the dangers they undertook when wandering into new lands.
