Pre-medical Undergraduate Mentoring Program (P.U.M.P)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Charles Drew Pre-Medical Undergraduate Mentoring Program is to encourage, support, and retain undergraduates in the pre-med curriculum at Columbia University by providing one-on-one peer mentorship.

Program Description

The program offers a one-on-one mentorship opportunity by recruiting Columbia upperclassmen to mentor first or second year premedical students. Each participant will gain ample knowledge on choosing a major, finding research and clinical opportunities, and preparing for the MCAT. PUMP also offers upperclassmen the opportunity to share their wisdom on how to succeed as a premedical student at Columbia.

We will conduct meetings every month in addition to the annual Charles Drew’s program-wide events. While PUMP pairs are expected to form lasting relationships by contacting each other on a bi-weekly bases and recording their experience on a spreadsheet, we encourage mentors to contact their mentees as often as possible.

In order to foster long-term relationships among its participants, PUMP will only consider applicants that are seriously committed to being an Advisor or Advisee. By participating in this program, we hope you will receive useful advice on how to succeed as a premedical student at Columbia, while forming bonds with individuals with similar aspirations.

Anyone interested in helping to organize our events or in becoming a PUMP mentor or mentee, feel free contact the PUMP Co Chairs at [email protected]
