Lee Patterson, Frederick W. Hilles Professor Emeritus of English, Yale University

The relation of works of art to their textual “sources” is far from simple. Can we always identify with certainty what text is the source? Does the text provide a reliable guide to interpretation, or does the artwork revise or even contradict the text? These and similar questions will be explored through close examination of three Frick masterworks and the texts that are thought to be their inspiration. Recommended for students of art history and literature.

This fall, the Frick Collection will be offering classes for educators, recent graduates, and university students. To register, email [email protected]. Classes are free but there is a $25 registration materials fee and registration is required. For a list of courses this year, visit here.
