The Medieval Forum at New York University Presents Sarah Kay, French Department on “Celestial Readings, Bestial Readers in Medieval Vernacular Bestiaries”
This illustrated talk addresses the conundrum of the bestiary, in which animals are read as bearers of religious readings, from the perspective of the human reader. If the bestial is a guide to the celestial, where does the human fit in? Both better and less well placed than other animals in relation to the divine, human readers have an ambiguous relation to their own animal nature, which is envisaged both as a skin in which they are clothed and as the page on which they read. The talk outlines the changing representation of this ambiguity from the oldest French bestiary, that of Philippe de Thaun, to the most recent, the so-called long version of Pierre de Beauvais.
