The Medieval-Renaissance Seminar will meet on Wednesday, February 8at 4:30PM in the English Department Grad Lounge (FBH 330), we will welcome Patricia Dailey (Columbia University) who will be discussing “Feeling Backward: Deor’s Poetics of Recall.”

Patricia writes:

My paper works to think about how Deor (and eventually, other works in the Exeter book) elicits what I call “responsiveness” in Anglo-Saxon literature. I am interested in how the way of characterizing the poem as elegy completely neutralizes many grammatical, thematic, and structural ambivalences in the poem. By experimenting with how the poem can be read differently, mainly, through a reassessment of its negativity — alongside or in tandem with a “queer negativity” — I hope to tease out how it promotes a different relation to time.”

Patricia’s paper – “Feeling Backward: Deor’s Poetics of Recall” – is available via a Pennkey-protected link on the Med/Ren library page. To access the paper, you will need to log in to the English department website; alternatively, we are happy to provide electronic copies via email upon request.
