The Music Department, the Center for Italian Studies, and the Kislak
Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts, present
“Italian Madrigals on Tablets,” a discussion of the digital edition of
the secular music of Luca Marenzio (1553-1599), one of the most
important composers of the Renaissance who set to music poetry by
Petrarch, Tasso, Bembo, Sannazaro, and others. His books of madrigals
and canzonette widely circulated throughout Europe, contributing to the
diffusion of Petrarchism. Speakers include: Mauro Calcagno (Penn),
Giuseppe Gerbino (Columbia), and Laurent Pugin (RISM-Switzerland). The
event includes a short music performance by the Penn Madrigal Singers.
