About the event:
This lecture explores parallels between the wrapping or clothing of sacred bodies and sacred books: the Word made flesh and the Word as text. In the fifteenth-century mundane fashion leads to a revision of ancient metaphors of body and garment, soul and body. Veils and drapery now constitute a more personal dwelling place for both images and bodies. The performative skills with which Filippo Lippi, Donatello and Giovanni Bellini negotiate clothing their images reveal significantly different attitudes to iconic tradition in Florence and Venice.
