NYU has announced the formal rebirth of NYU’s Medieval and Renaissance Graduate Interdisciplinary Student Network (MARGIN). This is a graduate student group for students in any department at NYU with an interest in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, or both.
This year there will be a series of seminars on Ovid and his significance to medieval and renaissance culture, a topic suggested by several MARGIN student members.
First session: Thursday September 8th, 7 o’clock @ Casa Italiana, Library
24 West 12th Street
Followed by our formal opening reception, 8:15.
The reception will include wine and light refreshments.
We firmly believe that our scholarship is made stronger, when we combine our own unique perspectives and skills with those of others. The group currently hosts students from the disciplines of English, French, Italian, History, and Art History, and we would be delighted to bring many more students into the group.
For our first session, we are delighted to host PhD student Stephanie Marie Crooks of the Department of Classics who has graciously agreed to introduce us to Ovid, his Latin, and particularly his elegiac poems. We, thereby, appropriately (and humorously) begin our year on the ‘afterlife’ of Ovid with the poet’s portrayal of his own death.
The sessions will culminate with a symposium, where students will present short conference-style papers that may develop into essays. An informal ‘zene’ will serve as a lasting record of the event.
