University Seminars at Columbia University Seminar on Religion and Writing

Najam Haider, Assistant Professor of Religion at Barnard College, will lead a discussion entitled “The Geography of the Isnad: Possibilities for the Reconstruction of Localized Ritual Practice in the 2nd/8th Century”

This talk will discuss how to utilize Sunni Muslim traditions concerned with issues of ritual law, namely the daily prayer, in an effort to reconstruct the dominant ritual practice, or practices, in the major Muslim urban centers Mecca, Medina, Basra, and Kufa of the early 2nd/8th century. The goal is to model the potential uses of Prophetic traditions in early Islamic historiography.

Drinks will be available in the Faculty House starting at 5:30 pm, dinner will follow at 6 pm.  The talk will begin at 7:00 pm sharp, on the second floor.

If you would like to attend the dinner prior to Professor Haider’s presentation, please confirm by notifying the rapporteur Hannah Barker
([email protected]) no later than TUESDAY, 24 April, 2012. If you would like to read the paper before the meeting, please contact Professor Haider for a copy ([email protected]).
