You are invited to attend The George J. Sommer Lecture on Literature at Marist College, which will take place on Tuesday, November 8, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Room of the Student Center. This year’s speaker is Dr. Richard K. Emmerson, Dean of the School of Arts and Professor of English and Art at Manhattan College. His talk, entitled “‘A Resemblance that Re-Produces’: Images in Medieval Illustrated Literary Manuscripts,” will explore the complex interplay between visual and textual rhetoric in the Ellesmere Manuscript of *The Canterbury Tales* and in other works.

One of the country’s most eminent medievalists, Dr. Emmerson has written dozens of scholarly articles and authored or edited six books, including the landmark studies *Antichrist in the Middle Ages* (1981)* *and *The Apocalyptic Imagination in Medieval Literature* (1992). As the Executive Director of the Medieval Academy for many years, he edited *Speculum: A Journal of Medieval Studies* and was named Outstanding Editor by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals in 2007. He has also been awarded
many grants, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and from the American Council of Learned Societies. A superlative teacher, Dr. Emmerson received the Medieval Academy of America Award for Excellence in Teaching Medieval Studies in 2009.

The annual Sommer Lecture is an endowed college event established by Professor Sommer’s former students upon his retirement. He taught English at Marist for over 40 years. The event is free and open to the public. I hope you can join us!

Marist College is located on the Hudson River 60 miles north of NYC in Poughkeepsie, NY and is easily accessible by Metro-North Commuter Railroad.
