The Afterlife of a German Captive: Cultural Memory and Colonial History in Brazil
A talk by Luciana Villas Bôas, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil
This talk traces the transmission of 16th century narrative of Hans Staden’s life with the Tupinamba that was initiated with its retelling in the 20th century in a children’s book by the Brazilian modernist Monteira Lobato from São Paulo in 1925. Analyzing the logic of the frameworks enabling Staden’s afterlife Villas Boas shows new links between the history of colonialism and the formation of a cultural memory in Brazil and beyond.
