Since the founding of the Saint Thomas church in the early 13th century, choral music has flourished in this revered Leipzig institution. Hundreds of compositions, in Latin and German, for Catholic as well as for Protestant services, have survived in the libraries of the church and its school, affording a comprehensive picture of the rich choral tradition before and after the Reformation. From the Music Cabinet of Saint Thomas Church, Leipzig is a program covering approximately 300 years of this repertory, framed by 14th-century chant melodies from the “Thomasgraduale (“Thomas Graduale”).” Highlights of the program include selections from two early Lutheran printed collections of hymns (the Florilegium selectissimum hymnorum) and of motets (the Florilegium portense), as well as Lutheran music by the two major German composers Johann Hermann Schein and Heinrich Schütz.
