St. Robert Southwell, S.J. Lecture–“Europe’s Mother: The Virgin Mary in the Public Sphere”

After the year 1000, the figure of the Virgin Mary became central to the devotional lives of the religious, and, gradually, to those of the secular clergy and the laity too. This lecture will explore the public face of the Virgin Mary, its place in the public sphere, and the collective interactions it inspired in the later medieval centuries.
Miri Rubin is professor of medieval history and head of the School of History at Queen Mary, University of London. She is interested in the religious cultures of medieval Europe and in the relations between Jews and Christians in the Middle Ages. She enjoys bringing medieval history to wider audiences and exploring interactions with scholars in other disciplines.
