The Early Modern Concept of History
A workshop by Luciana Villas Bôas and Kathy Eden (Columbia University, English and Classics)
This workshop will take as its point of departure a close reading of Reinhart Koselleck’s wide-ranging essay “Historia Magistra Vitae: The Dissolution of the Topos into the Perspective of a Modernized Historical Process.” Drawing on Classical, Renaissance and Enlightenment texts, Koselleck raises fundamental questions about how and why the concept of history changed in the early modern period.
