Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679): Drama, Politics, Religion and Aesthetics in the seventeenth-century Netherlands and Europe. A Workshop at Princeton University.
Unlike Dutch art, Dutch literature and its crucial role in European and world culture is little known outside of the Netherlands. Please join us on 18 October at 1 p.m. in Scheide-Caldwell 209 for an afternoon workshop on the great literary figure of the Dutch 17th century, Joost van den Vondel, notable among his European contemporaries for being not only a brilliant writer but also fearlessly politically engaged. We have three leading scholars from the Netherlands, Jan Bloemendal, Frans-Willem Korsten and Freya Sierhuis, and there will be comparisons of Vondel with other European dramatists in discussions led by Volker Schroeder, Russ Leo and Joel Lande.
All faculty and graduate students are welcome; if attending please RSVP [email protected].
