Beata Virgo: Marian Devotional Music from Medieval and Renaissance Europe

The nature of the Virgin Mary was admired and explored in the art and music of the Middle Ages in a variety of ways, from the remote and awe-invoking Mother of God of the Romanesque Sedes sapientiae, or Throne of Wisdom, to the sorrowful mother of the late-medieval pieta. Fascinated by these many representations during their previous visits to the museum, amarcord will perform Marian antiphons and motets interspersed with chant taken from the proper for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The program features music from France, England, Spain, Germany, and the Lowlands, including works of Gilles Binchois, Josquin des Préz and Hildegard von Bingen.

amarcord, one of today’s leading vocal ensembles, was founded in 1992 by former members of the Saint Thomas Boys’ Choir in Leipzig (Wolfram Lattke, Martin Lattke, Frank Ozimek, Daniel Knauft, and Holger Krause), one of the most illustrious churches in the history of western music (where Bach was its music director from 1723–1750, and where Wagner was baptized in 1813). The group’s impeccable technique and musical sensitivity, as well as versatile repertoire, have won them prestigious competitions in Spain, Finland, Germany, and the first Choirlympiad in Linz (Austria). In 2002, amarcord won the German Music Competition for Chamber Music in Bonn; along with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Saint Thomas Boys’ Choir, they have represented the vibrant musical scene of Leipzig in Germany and abroad. amarcord has performed at major music festivals throughout Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, and has an extensive discography of music from the Middle Ages to the present time.
