Johanna Hanink (Brown University) will discuss “The Dramatic Cityscape of Classical Athens.”

Prof. Hanink kindly shared an abstract of her upcoming talk:

“How did the physical structures of Athens, especially on the Acropolis, provide a kind of ‘scenography’ for performances in the city, at theater festivals and beyond? In the wake of the Persian destruction of Athens, the Athenians rebuilt the Acropolis such that the very citadel of their city would ‘perform’ a story – a drama unto itself. Later in the fifth century BCE, Athenian drama (both comedy and tragedy) made scenographic use of the cityscape, and particularly aspects of the built environment constructed under the purview of the so-called Periclean building program. This talk will therefore consider both how Athenian buildings and structures were designed to tell stories, and how Athenian storytelling—primarily drama—in turn interacted with the cityscape.”

The evening will begin with drinks at 5:45 PM at the first floor lounge of Faculty House, followed by dinner at 6:15 PM.  Please email our rapporteur, Jeremy Simmons ([email protected]) by noon on Monday, October 17th, in order to make a dinner reservation.  Note that the price of the meal is $30, payable only by check to “Columbia University.”
