The next meeting of the Columbia University Seminar on Medieval Studies will take place on Tuesday, April 18, at 5:30pm in Faculty House. Lucy Freeman Sandler, Helen Gould Sheppard Professor of Art History, emerita at New York University, will present “Medieval Pictorial Typology: The Contribution of England.”
Abstract
After an introductory survey of its rise, this illustrated lecture will focus on the important role played by England in the development of pictorial typology to maturity. Four examples will be discussed: the late twelfth century typological windows of Canterbury cathedral; the guide to pictorial typology known as Pictor in Carmine of ca. 1200; the early thirteenth century typological choir-stall paintings of Peterborough Abbey; and the series of typological miniatures of the early fourteenth century Peterborough Psalter in Brussels.
The talk will be followed by dinner at Faculty House at 7:00p. All those who wish to dine with Professor Sandler after the talk must make reservations by contacting the rapporteur of the seminar, John Glasenapp, either by phone or by email by Sunday, April 9. Dinner is a fixed buffet menu, which costs $30 per person. Payment is only by check made out to “Columbia University.”
