Meeting Date and Time: Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 5:30pm
Dinner Time: 7pm at Faculty House
Location: Columbia Faculty House (please check the sign as you walk in to Faculty House for our room assignment)
Speaker: Robert G. Davis (Theology, Fordham University)
Topic: ‘Weighing Affect in the History of Medieval Christianity’
Abstract from Professor Davis: This paper will explore some of the late medieval theological and devotional aspects of affect (affectus), primarily through an examination of the mystical writings of the thirteenth-century Franciscan theologian Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. I’ll discuss the contested categories of “Franciscan affect” and medieval Christian “affective devotion” in the context of the range of meanings invested in medieval affectus and late medieval devotion to the body of Christ and the saintly body. Finally, I’ll reflect on the relative value of recent work on the history of emotions and contemporary critical work on affect for illuminating the rhetorical and theological dynamics of late medieval Christian affectus.
Please note: We invite anyone who wishes to to remain at Faculty House for dinner after the talk. The University Seminars Office requires the rapporteur to collect payment for dinner ($25 per person; checks only, made payable to Columbia University). If you would like to attend, we ask that you RSVP to the rapporteur ([email protected]) by Monday, October 26, even if you are attending the talk only, as rooms are assigned based on the expected number of attendees.
