Director, Sharmin and Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Iran and Persian Gulf StudiesEuchaïta and St. Theodore: Some Recent Field ResearchSt. Theodore Tiro (‘the Recruit’) became one of the most important military saints in the Byzantine world and beyond. He was reportedly martyred at Amaseia in Pontos under the emperors Galerius and Maximinus Daia. His cult seems to have been well-established at nearby Euchaita by the end of the fourth century. In this paper, Dr. Haldon will discuss Theodore’s cult and its evolution and survey the results of recent archaeological fieldwork at Euchaita itself, which throw important light on both the cult and on aspects of late Roman and middle Byzantine urbanism.
Please let us know if you will be coming (affirmative RSVPs only). A PDF of Dr. Haldon’s book on the subject is available for those attending who RSVP in advance. Please RSVP to Leah Hanlon.
