Lunch Matter with Alexander Nagel: “Writing about art in an age of artistic retrospection”
As part of the series on “The Matter of Writing, we will be hosting a lunch-time conversation on Monday, December 9th with Prof. Alexander Nagel from New York University. We will discuss a selection of his recent art critical writings, along with excerpts from his new book, Medieval/Modern.
Prof. Nagel’s theme, “Writing about art in an age of artistic retrospection,” takes our consideration of writing this year into the realm of contemporary art criticism. Through his recent work, we will ask, how does retrospection play out in art historical scholarship, art criticism, and art making? What relation ought contemporary art practice have to historical writing?
The lunch with Alex Nagel will take place from on Monday, December 9th, 1 pm-2:30 pm in 40 McCosh. Food will be provided. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by Thursday, December 5 to Sonia (sdela) and Ashley (ashleyl) in order to receive the texts, a total of about 15 pages of required reading.
