The sculpture of the Baptistery at Parma, begun in 1196 by Benedetto Antelami, is without precedent or progeny in Italy. Its three exterior portals depict: (1) the Adoration of the Magi and the Old Testament ancestors of Christ; (2) the Last Judgment, the Acts of Mercy and the Parable in the Vineyard combined with the Ages of Man; and (3), the parable of Barlaam and Josaphat. The theological and pastoral aspects of the baptistery’s sculptural program are closely related to Innocent III’s plans for church reform and to his pastoral concerns. Additionally, the program at Parma is bound to the activities of a cadre of papal legates (e.g. Petrus Capuanus) who studied alongside the future Innocent III, then Lotario di Segni, at the nascent University of Paris.
