HEAR A MEDIEVAL MUSIC DRAMA IN A GOTHIC SETTING

An unusual opportunity to experience a thirteenth century Christmas musical drama, Officium Pastorum, in the kind of Gothic cathedral setting for which it was written, will be offered in the Princeton University Chapel on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 3:00 PM.  This play tells the familiar Christmas story of the Shepherds using dialogue, music and stage directions from a Rouen Cathedral manuscript of the thirteenth century.  While the play was originally part of a worship service, in this production thirteenth century sacred vocal and instrumental music from France, England and Spain has been added to round out the performance.   Period instruments including harp, veille, recorder and bells will be heard.

The play is being sponsored by the Guild for Early Music and is being co-directed by Mary Benton and Elizabeth Horn.  The cast includes singers and instrumentalists from Guild Ensembles including Vox Fidelis, The Engelchor Consort, Delaware River Consort and The Practitioners of Musick.

The Guild for Early Music, Inc. is a public charitable consortium of music ensembles of central New Jersey and neighboring Pennsylvania.  It seeks to foster appreciation of early music and encourage professional and amateur musicians and ensembles.  For information about the Guild for Early Music, visit www.guildforearlymusic.org.
