EMBODIED COGNITION IN LANGUAGE:
INSIGHTS FROM COGNITIVE LINGUISTICS

Reyes Llopis-García
Columbia University

What happens in the mind when language is at work? (Applied) Cognitive Linguistics provides both a theoretical and practical framework for understanding language as a manifestation of embodied cognition. The field views linguistic systems as largely emergent from sensorimotor and spatial interactions. Veering away from more traditional (generativist) accounts, CogLing considers language as part of our global cognitive capabilities. In this talk, this framework will be discussed, offering an outline of the field and its most interesting contributions to the study of language. Additionally, I will show how CogLing offers great avenues for L2 instruction, with pedagogical implications for teaching additional languages, as well as seeing how students can have a more memorable and effective L2 learning experience.
