About Me

Almudena

I am a Lecturer in Spanish at Barnard College. In my research, I explore how history and memory interact, particularly in the context of the transition from Franco’s dictatorship to democracy in Spain. Something that strikes me is how through memory we can tell many different stories that challenge one-sided historical discourses. In addition, I have taught several courses ranging from Spanish language to cultural content-based courses. During my PhD studies at Columbia University, I was selected as a Literature Humanities Preceptor in the Core Curriculum. This extraordinary opportunity to teach first-year students across disciplines did not only expand my intellectual horizons, but also offered me a genuine pedagogical experience.

When I came to NYC in 2012 for the first time, I was on the final stages of a PhD program at my home university in Córdoba (Spain). Life happens and now I see myself with two PhDs in hand. Researching and teaching is what I have devoted my life to, and I couldn’t have found a better path. I see myself as a committed scholar, striving to find ways to understand through literature and culture the complicated world we live in.
