Spring Admission Notes #2

This is the second entry to help spring applicants with the details of the application process.

Admission application review at SIPA is not rolling, rather we wait for the application deadline to pass, print all of the submitted applications, package all of the applications into different groups, and then distribute them to the Committee for review.  It takes about two weeks after the deadline to package everything and anywhere from 2-4 weeks for the review process to be completed.  This means we will inform spring applicants of our decision sometime in the first few weeks of November.

Applicants are informed of their decision on line.  Thus there is no mail delay.  We will mail official letters of admission at a later time, however we want applicants to know of their decision as soon as possible.

Spring applicants face a very tight time line.  Decisions will go out in November and Orientation starts on January 10th. Classes start the next week on January 18th.  This leaves roughly 8 weeks between admission notification and enrollment.  This is short period of time to find housing and confirm financing to pay for all of your expenses.  More information on expenses and financial aid in the next spring admission entry.

Spring Admission Notes #1

With the spring admission deadline only a month away I thought I would spend a few entries to elaborate a bit on the time line and details related to spring admission to our MIA and MPA programs.  I will offer my thoughts on compiling the best application possible in a different set of entries, these entries will be more about the  nuts and bolts of the process.  First off will be a few notes about the submission of documents and the time line.

The deadline to submit materials for spring admission is October 1st.  This means everything needs to be submitted on the application site or received in our office by October 1st at 11:59:59 P.M.  As a reminder, 100% of your application materials can be submitted online and this is our preference.  The reason is that this allows us to print your application all at one time without having to complete a matching process which can be time consuming.

Related to the deadline, applicants are directly responsible for submitting all of their information except for letters of recommendation.  Without fail, the biggest hindrance to completing an application on time each year is the on time submission of letters of recommendation.  Every year near the deadline we receive panicked emails from applicants informing us that for some reason a letter of recommendation will not be in by the deadline.

With this in mind, do everything in your power to ensure that letters of recommendation are submitted on time.  My advice is to ask the recommenders to submit the recommendation a minimum of one week prior to the actual deadline.  Thus it would be wise to reach out to these individuals and and ask them to submit the letters by September 24th.

We prefer that recommendation letters be submitted online because as I stated, we print the application all at one time.  If all of the letters are submitted online, they print with the rest of your application.  If the letters are mailed, we print your application and if the letters are not present, we have to then look to see if the letters were received by mail which takes additional time.

As a reminder, everything else can be self reported online by the application.  Applicants self report test scores on the application and upload all of the required documents.  We do not require that official test reports be received in our office by the admission deadline.  More details on what happens after the deadline passes in future entries.

It’s Springtime at SIPA (and Columbia)!

The following was prepared by SIPA student Joshua Huneycutt, a second year MIA student concentrating in Energy and Environmental Policy.

To accompany the lengthening days and shedding of layers that takes place in Morningside Heights around this time of year, the SIPA and Columbia communities stage a number of fun events to coax students out of their study caves (i.e. Lehman Library)and into the spring air.

On SIPA’s home turf, the spring fun typically kicks off with the annual SIPA BBQ.  This year‘s “Business Cards and BBQ” theme encourages SIPA students to get to know each other better via SIPA students’ favorite pastime – networking! Here, kegs of beer and grilled meats (and veggie burgers) kick off the season of sitting in SIPA’s terrace in the sun, and continuing the fun, and postponing the pain of tackling term papers and exams, SIPA stages its premiere entertainment event – Follies – the following day.

An age-old tradition, this variety show parodies the school’s quirks and foibles through musical numbers, songs, skits, and [plenty of videos (link: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sipa+follies&aq=f).  And if this wasn’t enough keep SIPA students going, the annual SIPA Gala (or SIPA Prom as it’s commonly known) takes place the following week, typically in a stunning venue with a top-shelf open bar to fuel the dancefloor.

If you’re burnt out on SIPA events, there are plenty of other things happening on campus.    This year’s annual “Bacchanal” party on Columbia’s main quad will feature none other than Wu-Tang’s own Ghostface Killah and psych popsters Of Montreal.  The following day, Barnard College’s radio hosts a more indie and metal-oriented day of free music and food, the WBAR-B-Q (link: http://www.wbar.org/).  The dark synth-pop stylings of Cold Cave and brutal black metal of the Columbia alum-led Liturgy surely warrant a visit by Columbia and NYC music lovers alike.

So while you might not be in the area for this year’s SIPA spring, rest assured that if you end up spending two years in these hallowed halls, the typical drudgery of exam season can end up being, well, kind of fun.

Spring 2010 Admission News

I want to provide a quick update to those that have applied for Spring 2010 admission.  The Admission Committee is in the final round of meetings and we should have all of our decisions made by early next week.  We then need to double check to make sure that everything is entered correctly and will notify applicants that the decision letter is available to view on the application Web site.

We really appreciate your patience and once letters have been posted an email message will be sent instructing you to log in to check your decision.  The process should be complete by the end of next week.
