join us for an online information session

SIPA is at it again… We’ll be online tomorrow, March 12th at 12Noon (New York time) — in the middle of our busiest week — to share with you why SIPA should be one of your educational destinations.  We will focus on the MIA and MPA two year programs.  If you haven’t registered for the information session, you can sign up online now.   You will need access to a computer with audio, internet connection and Adobe Flash Player to participate in the session.

If you rather visit us in person, you’re always welcomed to come by.  For our spring schedule, please visit our website.

you can’t come to us, so we’ll come to you… virtually

As I mentioned in an earlier post, one of the best parts of our job in Admissions is meeting new and interesting people who want to make a difference in the world.   People make the trip to visit us in New York  or find us on the road when we are touring the country and parts of the world in the fall.  But not everyone can come to New York and we, unfortunately, can’t travel to every city in the world, so let’s meet online.

We are hosting a virtual information session for our two-year full time Master of International Affairs and Master of Public Administration programs on Wednesday, September 26th at 10:00 AM EDT.  Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see us — since we won’t have video capability yet — but you’ll hear us talk about the program, what we look for in an application, and financial aid options.  Of course, we’ll also be available to answer your questions.  So register and join us next week for a one hour session from anywhere around the world.  See you online!

A day in Admissions

9am: [large] coffee in hand, I was ready to conquer the applications I left sitting on my desk the night before…

then the day got started…

9:30am: followed up on some emails.  counted days left before majority of the admission decisions are released in March <panic>.

10am: Fellowship Committee Meeting — reevaluating how funds are dispersed for 1st and 2nd year students.

11am: crunched some application numbers — approximately 90% of applications submitted are complete.  If you haven’t sent in your missing documents — you know who you are — please send them in.

12pm: MIA/MPA information Session today —  Thank you for joining us!

2pm – 5pm: I blocked a couple of hours today to read files but with the multiple interruptions throughout the day from conversations about Disneyland and peanut M&Ms (an office favorite) to calming over anxious callers to mandatory computer software updates… I was only able to live vicariously through a few applicants as they talked about their commitment to public service and their exploration of the world and of themselves… Unfortunately, by the end of the day the stack did not get much shorter — not a very productive reading day.

5pm:  take a break to recap the day on the Admissions Blog, which I have dreadfully neglected for weeks.

6pm:  somehow more files have found their way into my office.   Guess I will have some interesting reading this weekend (while my babies nap).

Top 10 Communication Tips 2011 – #9

This is the ninth entry in our “Top 10″ list for you to consider when communicating with our office and applying.

Number 9 – Attend an information session or recruitment event.

While I realize not everyone can make it to New York, if you can the best way to obtain information is to attend an information session.  If you live nearby or are visiting New York this is probably the best way to learn about our programs and how to put together a competitive application.  Due to the large number of visitors and our small staff we are unable to arrange walk in appointments.  You are always welcome to visit and someone will assist you, however we are rarely able to provide extensive individual counseling appointments.

If you would like to attend an information session, which are held every Monday at 6pm and every Friday at 12pm excluding holidays, it is best to send an email to [email protected] and we will respond with a confirmation message and directions.

We also attend recruitment events in the U.S. and abroad.  You can view our fall 2011 recruitment schedule by clicking here.

Top 10 Tips for Communicating With Us No. 9: Attend an information session, tour, or recruitment event

Updated: March 2016

This is the ninth entry in our “Top 10″ list for you to consider when communicating with our office and applying.

Number 9 – Attend an information session, tour, or recruitment event

While I realize not everyone can make it to New York, if you can visit campus the best way to obtain information is to attend an information session.  If you live nearby or are visiting New York attending a session is probably the best way to learn about our programs and how to put together a competitive application.  Due to the large number of visitors and our small staff we are unable to arrange walk in appointments.  You are always welcome to visit and someone will assist you, however we are rarely able to provide extensive individual counseling appointments. The Office of Admissions is open 9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday, and there are usually current students or admissions officers available to chat briefly with anyone who stops in with a question.

If you would like to attend an information session or attend a SIPA tour, you can see our schedule of upcoming sessions within the Information Sessions or Tour tab on the Visit SIPA website. Click on the information session for the programs that interest you and then register for the date you can attend on the calendar that appears.

SIPA admissions officers also attend recruitment events in the U.S. and abroad.  You can view our recruitment schedule on the Visit SIPA website as well. You can find the information within the Off-Campus Events/Recruitment Calendar section. However, you are always welcome to come to the office during business hours and ask a few questions or obtain information.
