Course-selection advice for incoming students

The Office of Admissions has received several inquiries from incoming Fall 2015 students about orientation, course registration and assistantships. Luckily, one of our Admissions Ambassadors decided to share with all of you some “insider’s knowledge” on how to approach academics and financial aid at SIPA. Here’s what Sriram Gutta, MPA ’15, had to say:

Interschool Fellowships

Each year, Columbia makes a few scholarships and fellowships available to students from all schools within the University. These awards, known as Interschool Fellowships, are the result of donations from generous supporters of the University and tend to have very specific eligibility criteria.  The annual amounts of these awards are generally in the range of $1,000 to $5,000. To see if you may meet the eligibility criteria required to apply for these awards for the 2015-2016 academic year, please review them here.

If you meet the full criteria for one or more of these Interschool Fellowships, to apply please submit this Application Form and accompanying materials no later than Monday June 15, 2015.

Please read the information carefully and do not apply for an award for which you do not meet all criteria. Applications that do not meet the eligibility criteria, or applications that are incomplete, will not be accepted.

Since these awards are for all Columbia University students, SIPA does not choose the recipients, but we can  nominate eligible applicants. Decisions on the awards will be made in late August.

Please submit all applications (and accompanying materials) to the SIPA Financial Aid Office no later than the close of business, Monday June 15, so we may properly review all applications. You may mail all materials directly to us at 514 West 113th Street, New York, NY 10025.

Here are a few scholarships worth applying to

With the New Year there are new scholarships (along with their looming deadlines). Many SIPA students receive aid from outside sources, such as their employers, philanthropic groups, or agencies in their own countries. However, those aren’t the only sources of funding. There are thousands of organizations out there that want to assist students with their education in public policy and international affairs. Below are a few outside scholarships for SIPA applicants that were hand-selected by our Office of Financial Aid.

Each year, many of our students receive financial support from sources other than SIPA and Columbia University. But they didn’t stumble upon those sources by chance. We’ve realized that it can be time consuming searching the web for potential sources of financial aid, and want to offer you a helping hand. Below are five outside funding opportunities with deadlines that are fast approaching.

You can find many external funding sources by checking out our External Funding Page, where there are more than 240 different outside scholarships, grants and fellowships available for our outstanding students and those interested in public policy programs. Just keep in mind that external or outside awards may affect eligibility for student loans. There are also external funding sources that SIPA provides partial matches for, increasing recipients’ funding. Thus, notify the SIPA Financial Aid Office if you’ve received any additional funding, so that  you do not miss out on any other funding opportunities.

If you have any questions about financial aid, contact us at 212-854-6216 or at [email protected]
