7 ways to combat the graduate ‘freshman 15’

Here in the United States, incoming college students are warned of the “freshmen 15:” a term coined to describe the tendency of some students to put on weight during their first time away from home—likely due to temptation at the dining halls, late night studying and irregular hours, stress and a new schedule.  The veracity of this phenomenon has been called into question and doesn’t appear to be as widespread in graduate school. A preview of SIPAGovTech2015

We at SIPA and our partners at the Columbia Global Center are thrilled to inform you that we’re hosting the “Technology and Innovation in the Public Service” conference this week. For registered attendees, this is a chance to engage with top public sector managers from Brazil, India and other Columbia Global Center locations, as well as to watch and debate new audiovisual case studies filmed on location in New York, Rio, Mumbai and other cities. While registration for the event is already at capacity, I thought it would be nice to highlight the six case studies that will be discussed at the conference. There’s some pretty interesting content, so take a look at it and tell us what you think on social media using #SIPAGovTech2015.

We’re closed Thursday for graduation

We’ll be cheering on our graduating Seeple—and bawling like babies when no one’s looking—so the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid will close early on Thursday, May 21, 2015. If you have any questions or concerns, please stop by the office between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. EST this Thursday. We’ll resume our normal business hours on Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

And a BIG congratulations to our Program Assistants! They will be missed, but all of us here are excited to see what they’ll accomplish next. If you’d like to reminisce with us, take a look back at some of the posts our PAs wrote this past year.

Tell us about yourself!

This is an open call to all of our incoming Fall 2015 MIA/MPA students. We’d love to hear about why you chose SIPA and your expectations for the upcoming academic year. Please email us at [email protected] to share your personal admissions story, what your summer vacation will entail/did entail, or anything else you think your peers would enjoy reading about! You may submit a blog post of your choosing, or submit the New Student Survey with pre-populated questions to get you started. And don’t forget to submit a photo or two to help us visualize your story!

We look forward to receiving your submissions.
