We at SIPA and our partners at the Columbia Global Center are thrilled to inform you that we’re hosting the “Technology and Innovation in the Public Service” conference this week. For registered attendees, this is a chance to engage with top public sector managers from Brazil, India and other Columbia Global Center locations, as well as to watch and debate new audiovisual case studies filmed on location in New York, Rio, Mumbai and other cities. While registration for the event is already at capacity, I thought it would be nice to highlight the six case studies that will be discussed at the conference. This Saturday, February 27, 2010, The Morningside Post will host a conference titled “Policy Making in the Digital Age.” If you are not yet familiar with The Morningside Post (TMP), we are SIPA’s student-run blog. TMP aims to foster the debate you didn’t have in class and to feature the most passionate and inquisitive voices in the SIPA community and beyond.
The conference will consider how the Internet and digital technology are changing policy making and international affairs. It comes at a time when the intersections between digital technology and international affairs are increasingly evident, from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent speech on internet freedom and the China-Google censorship controversy, to the Data.gov initiative and the use of Twitter during the Haiti earthquake and the Iranian elections.
Keynote presentations will be given by Richard Boly, director of the Office of eDiplomacy for the U.S. State Department, Jonathan Zittrain, co-founder of Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, and Brian Storm, president of MediaStorm.
We will feature panels and speakers on a variety of topics, including information communication technology (ICT) and development (including a special forum on Haiti and a discussion of telemedicine strategies), new media and authoritarianism, open governance, and a roundtable discussion of how policy schools can get involved in the debate. Our high profile speakers come from the U.S. Department of State’s Office of eDiplomacy, New York City Council, FrontlineSMS, Ushahidi, and Columbia, Harvard and Stanford Universities.
The policy makers and practitioners who succeed in this landscape will be those who can adapt thoughtfully and quickly to meet the challenges – and opportunities – presented by these digital tools.

Six SIPA students will be participating at a high level international conference on the politics and economics of the international financial system. The conference takes place on the 7th and 8th of January in Paris. Accommodation and travel costs will be fully covered by the French Ministry of Immigration, Integration, National identity and Solidarity Development through SIPA’s partner school at Sciences Po Paris.

The following is an interview with Kirsten Bokenkamp, Head Organizer of SIPA’s Office of Career Services Washington D.C. Career Conference which takes place each January.
What is the Washington D.C. Career Conference?
The Washington D.C. Career Conference has taken place annually for the last 33 years. As SIPA is located in New York, the Conference allows students to learn more about job and internship opportunities in the Washington D.C. area. The Conference also allows students to get to know alumni and potential employers in the D.C. area.
Which employers participated in last years conference?
There was a wide range of employers represented at the Conference. How does the Conference work? What is the process that the students go through?
Interested students must register for the Conference in advance. At the time of registration, students pay the fee (this year it was $60), and sign up for the panels they would like to attend. The Conference takes place during winter break, on the Thursday and Friday before classes start. On Thursday, there are usually about 15 panels, with 3-5 speakers each. Panel topics include all of SIPA’s functional concentrations, in addition to career paths such as consulting, microfinance, and corporate social responsibility. The Conference also includes the Alumni Networking Reception on Thursday evening, where students and alums are able to socialize in a less formal environment. For the past two years, the Networking Reception has been at the Four Seasons Hotel, in Georgetown. On Friday, students have the chance to schedule informational interviews with alums and participate in employer site visits. This year employer site visits included the World Bank, the U.S. Department of State, and Treasury, USAID, and American Development Bank.
Overall, was the Conference well attended? Did participants and employers seem pleased with their experience? Any comments you received from them are welcome.
Each year the Career Conference is well attended by about 160 students and 150 alums. This is one of the most popular programs that the Office of Career Services offers.

Eight students from SIPA are attending the 4th GPPN Student Conference titled “Crisis as Opportunity – What Policies Do We Need for Sustainable Development Today?” which takes place from November 11-13 at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore.
The GPPN brings together some of the world’s premier teaching and research institutions of global public policy. The wider partnership includes Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the Hertie School of Governance, the University of Tokyo, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Sciences Po Paris.
The conference takes places parallel to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s CEO summit that attracts world leaders, including president Obama, to Singapore. Some of the key speakers during the first day of the conference include the Secretary General of ASEAN, Surin Pitsuwan, the president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno and the well-known academic Kishore Mahbubani.
