How do members of the Deaf community communicate? How do syntax, morphology, and phonology work in a language that is signed, rather than spoken?
Investigate these questions and more with CU Sign! This student organization offers free, beginner-friendly classes in American Sign Language (ASL) every week. Join CU Sign to deepen your linguistic knowledge, connect with the Deaf community, and make new friends.
See below for more information, provided by Linguistics major Lyla Jade Taylor (GS ’26), the treasurer of CU Sign.

CU Sign makes learning sign language accessible to students at Columbia University. We provide weekly ASL lessons and connect students to the Deaf community by participating in ASL related events and activities. Anyone is welcome and free to come to meetings anytime.
Interested in taking ASL for course credit? As of Fall 2025, ASL is offered at Barnard! See the Columbia directory of classes or Vergil for details.
