We are very pleased to announce the recipients of the Fall 2014 History in Action Project Awards (HAPA). We received seven applications in August and we, for this first round, we chose to fund those which build upon an already ongoing history-in-action activity. The following projects promise to contribute in a substantive and long term manner to historical thinking in public life, while being engaged with the individual research missions.

Daniel Morales’ “Hicks Camp: Early Mexican Migration to El Monte California” and Nick Juravich’s “Community-Driven Histories of Community-based Activism in South El Monte” are both partnerships with South El Monte Arts Posse (SEMAP), an interdisciplinary arts collective”. These two projects will integrate with SEMAP’s effort “East of East: Mapping Community Narratives in South El Monte and El Monte” by digitizing city records and making oral histories of past migrations available.

Kathryn Lasdow is funded for her work with the Brooklyn Historical Society on their interactive exhibit Along Brooklyn’s Waterfront. This exhibit will bring to the public the history of development and change along the waterfront.

We congratulate the awardees and we stress that all seven applications could have been filled, but we made a strategic choice to have two rounds of funding for AY ’14-’15 and that entailed turning down some of these remarkable projects.
