Overview

The Global Health Research Center of Central Asia (GHRCCA) integrates a multidisciplinary team of faculty, scientists, researchers, and students committed to advancing solutions to health and social issues in Central Asia and the surrounding region. The Center’s core activities are outcome-driven and designed to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations in the region; including drug users and their partners, migrant workers from around the region, sex workers, women and children.

 

Mission

GHRCCA develops and advances evidence-based, sustainable solutions to emerging public health and social issues in the Central Asia region.

History

In 2007, Columbia University established GHRCCA, Inc. with a branch office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In 2010, the work of Wellspring NGO in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia was incorporated into the scope of the Center. In 2011, a local NGO was established in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The Center also has Regional Representatives in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. GHRCCA is designed to develop and scale-up evidence-based, sustainable solutions to address health and social challenges in Central Asia and Mongolia.

Scientific Advisory Committee

The Scientific Advisory Committee is a group of regionally recognized leaders and international experts in areas including global health research, political science, economics, and international relations. This committee is responsible for:

  • Advising on research and training needs
  • Advising on funding strategies
  • Reviewing progress and giving feedback
  • Internal and regional expansion
  • Developing new strategies for collaboration

Faculty and Research Affiliates

The Faculty and Research Affiliates are a multidisciplinary group at Columbia University and outside institutions who are conducting or interested in conducting research in Central Asia and the surrounding region. The Faculty and Research Affiliates meet quarterly to communicate about research activities and collaboration.

Partners: University and Affiliates

GHRCCA has been established through a partnership with SIG leadership and former SIG student interns from the Central Asia region, and extends the SIG mission globally. GHRCCA and SIG share key leaders and faculty, and a cross-cultural learning approach: lessons learned in domestic and international projects influence each other and shape new and innovative approaches to community research design and methods.
