Learn more about pursuing a graduate degree in international affairs

We’re heading down to DC on Wednesday, June 19th.  Spread the word.  If you are in the area and want to mingle with admissions representatives, alumni and current students; you should plan to stop by.  If you can’t make it to this one, we’ll be back again on July 18th.

Representatives from the following graduate international affairs programs will be available:

  • Columbia University – School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA)
  • Georgetown University – Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service
  • Johns Hopkins University – The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)
  • Princeton University – The Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs
  • Tufts University – The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy

Registration will start at 5:30 p.m., presentation begins at 6:00 p.m.  If you are interested in attending, you may register in advance through the Summerfest 2013 Eventbrite link: http://summerfest13.eventbrite.com/.

The event will be held at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), Kenney Auditorium, 1740 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20036.  The easiest method of transportation is via Metro. SAIS is about a 5-minute walk from the Dupont Circle Metro stop (Red Line).

join us for an online information session

SIPA is at it again… We’ll be online tomorrow, March 12th at 12Noon (New York time) — in the middle of our busiest week — to share with you why SIPA should be one of your educational destinations.  We will focus on the MIA and MPA two year programs.  If you haven’t registered for the information session, you can sign up online now.   You will need access to a computer with audio, internet connection and Adobe Flash Player to participate in the session.

APSIA Admission Forum comes to NYC on Monday

We’ll be participating at several APSIA forums this fall.  The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) comprises 34 member schools in North America, Asia and Europe dedicated to the improvement of professional education in international affairs and the advancement thereby of international understanding, prosperity, peace, and security.

Each year, APSIA sponsors forums where prospective graduate students, career advisors, and education counselors can learn about programs from officers of APSIA member schools.

In addition, you can:

  • Meet admissions officers from the professional schools of international affairs at leading universities
  • Discuss admissions requirements, common curricula, financial aid packages, joint degree programs, and career opportunities
  • Collect application information on programs of interest
  • Attend career panels featuring alumni of APSIA schools

Summer preparation

I hope you are enjoying the photo submissions from our new first year students.   Maybe next year your photos will appear in our blog as an incoming student.  However, first you need to apply and be admitted… and also take some great photos for submission.

Don’t start the application just yet since the 2013 application will not go live until August.  So in the meantime, I suggest you use the summer to learn more about the programs by visiting fairs (we’ll be in DC on July 19 & July 20), scouring school websites, and attending campus information sessions.  You should also prep for the GRE (and TOEFL/IELTS), reconnect with a professor and/or a professional associate who can write you a glowing recommendation and of course think about why you want to pursue a Master’s degree – specifically in international affairs or public administration. This will help you formulate your thoughts and explain to the various Admissions Committees why you are ready for graduate school.  Most importantly, you should explore and experience life — so your discussions in the classroom will be richer.

The summer is a time to lounge by the pool, catch up on reading, explore a country, get more work experience under your belt, discover yourself… and possibly think about going to graduate school. 

If you are in the Washington, DC area on Tuesday, June 19th or Wednesday, June 20th and want to meet with an admissions representative to talk about how Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs fits into your educational and professional goals; find us at Summerfest held at Johns Hopkins SAIS at 6pm tomorrow evening or at the Idealist Graduate Fair held at American University from 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday.
