SIPA Stories with Katie Jacobs Stanton and Mayor Eric Garcetti

We hosted an energetic and busy Summerfest NYC yesterday and met so many fantastic people. Thank you to all who came to network with us and the other top policy schools. If you’re in the D.C. area and are interested in graduate programs in international affairs, stop by Summerfest D.C. tonight.

A common question from prospective students last night was about how the MIA, MPA, or MPA-DP program would help them in their future careers. Who better to answer this question than two former students / current alumni?

Katie Jacobs Stanton (MIA ’95) shares how her SIPA education was applicable across her career in government and technology. She is the chief marketing officer of Color and former VP of global media for Twitter.

For a different perspective, Eric Garcetti (MIA ’93) was elected Mayor of Los Angeles in 2013 and speaks to how he wants Los Angeles to “become an example of how we bring folks across cultures together to build a new city.”

You can meet more of the people devoted to addressing public policy challenges at SIPA Stories.

Former mayor of Philadelphia joins SIPA

I recently shared an extensive blog post highlighting all of the new faculty, professional practitioners and visiting scholars at SIPA this year. Today, I received word that there’s another prominent person to add the list: the Honorable Michael A. Nutter. Here’s an excerpt of the welcome from SIPA Dean Merit E. Janow:

I am pleased to announce that the Honorable Michael A. Nutter, former mayor of Philadelphia, will join the SIPA faculty this semester as a professor of professional practice in urban policy.

As many of you know, Mayor Nutter recently completed eight years of service as Philadelphia’s chief executive, where he was widely recognized as a reformer who led changes in policing, economic development, taxation, sustainability policy, and other important areas. From 2012 to 2013, he also served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

He was among the United States’ most visible and commended mayors: named a Public Official of the Year by Governing magazine in 2014, and cited by Esquire as one its Americans of the Year in 2011. The city government of Philadelphia received more than 150 awards for innovative programs, good government practices, and general excellence during his tenure.

Prior to becoming mayor, Mr. Nutter served as a member of the Philadelphia City Council for nearly 15 years, from 1992 to 2006, and also as chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority Board from 2003 to 2007. A West Philadelphia native and lifelong city resident, he was educated at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

He will bring immense insights and experience to SIPA, including our degree concentration in Urban and Social Policy. I hope you will join me in welcoming him to our community.

So there you have it! We’ve officially added to our ranks another U.S. mayor. (NYC Mayor David N. Dinkins anyone?)

You may read more about Mayor Nutter’s background on the SIPA website.

Congrats to Bill de Blasio!

Congrats Bill!  Bill de Blasio was elected mayor of New York City yesterday (read more).  Did we mention he’s a SIPA alum — MIA 1987.

Mayors of NYC and London on Campus Today

Today SIPA students have the opportunity to hear from the Mayors of both NYC and London.  As part of the World Leaders Forum the following event is taking place today on campus.

THINKING BIG New York and London: Heading Back to the Top
Date: September 15, 2009 from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Location: Rotunda, Low Memorial Library

This program, featuring Mayors Michael Bloomberg of New York and Boris Johnson of London, is the keystone of a three-day conference in New York planned as the kickoff for continuing discussion between these two great cities.  During the conference and beyond, invited participants will focus on major issues facing New York and London: the future of their financial sectors, the diversification of their economies, building and maintaining their capital plants, and expanding housing affordability.

Presented by:

The Center for Rethinking Development at the Manhattan Institute
The Center for Urban Innovation at the Regional Plan Association
