The BEST of Columbia University

One of the great things about being a SIPA student is that while students have access to the wonderful resources SIPA offers, students also have access to the resources of a world class university comprised of 21 different schools and affiliated institutions.  The following entry highlights some of the benefits.  The entry was written by SIPA student Carrie Dorn.

Gaining admission to the School of International and Public Affairs not only opens up your access to SIPA’s institutes, events and student groups— it also allows you to access to the rest of Columbia University.  Once you learn your way around the International Affairs building and find your favorite seat in Lehman library, students can get so wrapped up in SIPA life that they don’t venture out to explore the rest of campus.  Here’s a cheat sheet of resources to take advantage of during your time at Columbia.

Feed Your Brain: CLASSES

Did you hope to enhance your academic repertoire by learning about health literacy, media culture in China or land use law?  With SIPA’s flat rate tuition, you can cross register at other graduate schools and may be able to count relevant classes towards your concentration and specialization.

Cozy Up With Your Textbook: LIBRARIES

While SIPA’s Lehman Library has everything you need, why not vary your study environment?  Your CU ID gives you access to swipe into libraries all around campus.  Many students like Teachers College library, around the corner from SIPA on 120th St., which provides a relaxing environment for students to comfortably do group work.   Others enjoy the Social Work Library, located 3 blocks up from SIPA, where windows overlooking Amsterdam Avenue and 121st Street offer direct sunlight and some good people-watching.  Night owls may prefer to spend late paper-writing nights uptown in the Health Sciences Library at 168th St., which is bustling with medical students at all hours.   With some exploration you can find the perfect study environment for you.

Even Columbia knows that you didn’t move to New York City to spend all of your time in the library!  That’s why the Arts Initiative at Columbia University works to make art and cultural events accessible and affordable for students.  Your student ID allows you free admission into more than 30 NYC museums and can get you discounted tickets to movies, restaurants and Broadway shows.

Refuel Your Day: GOOD EATS

Wherever you find yourself on campus, there is no shortage of places to pick up a snack.  SIPA students are lucky to have a café on the 6th floor to grab lunch and coffee in between classes.  Brad’s, located in the School of Journalism, is a great place to buy coffee, salads or baked goods to help get through your day.  You can also watch the buzz around the Morningside campus in their semi-open seating on warm days.   In the winter, a better option may be Lenfest Café in the Law school—accessible through the south hallway at SIPA—which offers a variety of sandwiches, sushi and other prepared foods.  On Thursdays and Sundays you can find locally produced cheeses, organic veggies and freshly baked bread at the Farmer’s Market while strolling down Broadway (between 114th and 115th Streets).

Relax Underground: MUSIC SPOT

Under the beautiful St. Paul’s Chapel, located right on campus between Avery and Buell Hall, the Postcrypt Coffehouse offers acoustic music every Friday and Saturday night during the school year.  In an intimate setting, you can unwind at the end of a busy week while listening to the tunes of local talent.

New Student Orientation Schedules

Mandatory orientation for new students joining for fall 2010 starts on Monday, August 30th.  The schedules have been released by the Office of Student Affairs and I am happy to share the schedules here.  MPA-DP Orientation details will be made available during the required MPA-DP “Getting Started Program” that commences on August 16th.

Questions such as the following, and many more, will all be answered during Orientation:

  • When do I register for classes?
  • How do I register for classes?
  • How many courses can I take per term?
  • When/how do I declare my concentration?
  • Are certain prerequisites required for particular courses?
  • Can/should I register for language courses?
  • How do I access career services?
  • Can I use facilities across campus?
  • Who do I talk to/where do I go if I need medical attention?
  • What safety services are available?

Plenty of returning students will be available, there are sure to be events in the evenings that are not part of the official schedule, and faculty/administrators will be available as well.  Business casual attire should be worn during Orientation.  We look forward to seeing new students soon and here are the schedules:

Summer Reflections 2010 – Post #5

John Hughes just graduated from SIPA and during his second year of study worked in our office.  He is spending the better part of the summer in the office to assist with projects and help fill in for a staff member on maternity leave.  John is set up for a job in Washington, D.C. and will be moving there in August (our second largest alumni network in the world is in D.C if you were interested).

I asked John to reflect a bit on his experience as a SIPA student and contribute to the blog over the summer.  This is his fifth entry.

I was asked a couple of days ago by a prospective student on the phone how many hours I put in during a typical week at SIPA.   I responded to him that though it was hard to define a “typical” week at SIPA, on average I put in about 50-60 hours a week towards SIPA-related activities.  To be clear, I did not spend 50-60 hours a week on academics.  Though studying was certainly an integral part of my daily graduate school existence, the experience was far more diverse than this.  In this post I’ll try to paint a picture of how those hours were broken down.

SIPA classes usually meet once a week for two hours.  There are many exceptions to this, however:  The year-long econ first-year sequence meets twice a week for 1 ½ hours each time, as do a few other quantitatively-heavy courses like corporate finance.  Language courses, if you choose or are required to take them, meet 3-4 days a week for 1 ½ hours or so depending on the language, how hard it is to learn that language, and whether the class is an intensive module or not.  These language courses are usually offered through Columbia College, though SIPA has a few of its own courses as well.

Some courses have what we call Recitations (again, usually quantitatively-heavy ones), which are optional review classes held once a week for two hours (typically on Friday) and led by second-year students who did well in the class.  Though these are not required it is very common for students to attend them, especially for difficult classes like econ.  Some actually are required, such as the labs for the required stats class.  Finally, the first year Conceptual Foundations (MIA) or Politics of Policy-making (MPA) classes have, in addition to lecture, a recitation once a week led by a PhD Columbia fellow that is mandatory.  This overview does not take into account courses taken at other graduate schools at Columbia, which may meet more or less often than SIPA courses, though usually also meet once a week.  All in all, I’d say SIPA students spend about 15 hours in class/recitations.

These hours only represent actual class time, however, and do not take into account studying.  This studying generally falls into two categories:  Self-study and group work.  I probably spent 15 hours in a normal week reading/writing etc., and an additional 5 hours on group work.  Group work, though less time-consuming, was also more difficult to coordinate with others to find a good time to meet.  It could also very easily take up much more time depending on the project.  There were some weeks where I spent 20 hours on one group project.  I know people who spent much more time doing homework and group work, and others who spent less.  This is also only an average.  Some weeks, especially those couple just after mid-terms and finals, I did very little work.  Other weeks, in the week leading up to mid-terms and finals and during those periods I seemed to do nothing but study.

The third thing I spent time on each week was on professional-related activities.  The time I spent on such activities varied, depending on the week, though I spent at least 5 hours and usually more like 10+ on this.  I logged these hours in a variety of ways:  I spent a good bit of time networking with alumni, sending out initial e-mails of introduction, conducting informational interviews in person or over the phone, and meeting alumni at various networking events.

Depending on the season, I also spent time attending company/government agency presentations on campus.  Most of these occur in September and October for the private sector and early in the second semester for the public and non-profit sectors.  There was about a month at the beginning of both Falls that I attended at least a couple recruiting events a week, though at other times of the year my efforts were more self-driven (contacting alumni as described above).  I also attended talks and other networking events offered by associations in New York outside of SIPA and Columbia from time to time, though these were rather sporadic.  I did not spend that much time actually applying for jobs and internships.  I certainly checked SIPALink, our on-line jobs database, regularly, and applied to some jobs and internships that appealed to me.  However, this was never more than 2-3 hours a week as I felt that my time was better served networking unless I saw a job on there that I was really excited about.

Each week at SIPA I tried to attend at least one speaker or other similar event on campus.  Though I certainly didn’t succeed every single week, I managed to do this most weeks and even go to more than one quite often.  These events ranged from guest lectures from people in numerous fields to student group cultural nights.  The events often came with food, and were a great way for a busy graduate student to take his mind off studying and get a quick, free meal.

Finally, I spent time socializing at SIPA.  As a married student, I did not spend nearly as much time as some friends of mine socializing with other SIPA students.  Nevertheless, I did make it to most of the bigger parties and a few smaller ones as well, and spent a lot of time just hanging out with friends I met at SIPA.  Almost every week (or at least every other week) the student association sponsors parties of all sorts, ranging from clubs rented out downtown to smaller parties on the 6th floor at school.  Each student group also hosts parties, and groups of students go out and do stuff in New York together all the time.  If you wanted to, it would be possible to find something social to do with other SIPA students every night, though this might not be good for the academics or the wallet.

When I add all of these things up, I come up with my number of 50-60 hours a week.  It is definitely possible to spend less time doing something SIPA-related (other than academics nothing else is required), and it’s also possible to spend a lot more time than I did at SIPA.  I know people who seemed to be at school everyday from 9-9, not just in class and studying but often just hanging out on the 4th or 6th floor with whoever else was around and attending as many lectures/events as possible.  I know others who I had a class with, but who had a completely separate life outside of SIPA and liked it that way.    Regardless of what you choose to do, I guess my point is that the choice is yours to make.  All of you will get a top-notch education, and for those of you who choose to get more than just an education out of the school you will certainly have opportunities.

I can say, definitely, that I never felt like I didn’t have time to simply enjoy New York and/or just hang out with my wife, except during mid-terms and finals.  Those periods are rightly tough and do require you to study a lot.  At other times, however, you are able (and I encourage you) to get out of school and go explore this wonderful, crazy city and all it has to offer.  I think you’ll find that time away from school, even for only a few hours, puts graduate life in perspective.  It makes you both realize how great you have it to be a student again and, at the same time, reminds you to not get too stressed about school.

I often speak to incoming students here at the Admissions Office who tell me that they “were admitted into the EPD concentration” or “accepted into IFEP” etc.  Though it is good that these students know what they wish to concentrate in at SIPA, I thought I should write a blog post about what to consider when you are actually selecting courses.

First, if you came to SIPA for a specific concentration, by all means take all the courses that interest you in that concentration.  However, it is not necessary to limit yourself to only courses within your chosen concentration, and you can always switch your concentration if you decide there is a different one that better fits your interests (that said, you should have a good idea of the path you want to pursue before you come, and your admissions essays should reflect this).  One of the great advantages of SIPA over many of our rival schools is the breadth of courses available to students, both within SIPA and at the other graduate schools at Columbia.

Every semester there are scores of courses offered at SIPA, plus many more open to SIPA students at all the other graduate schools.  You will receive a list of what these courses are (including those at other schools) before registration, and I would recommend looking through this list thoroughly before choosing your courses.  Many incoming students have the misperception that they must do as many courses within their chosen concentration as possible in order to set themselves up best after graduation, though this is not necessarily the case.  The reality is that your concentration does not show up on your transcript, and potential employers will never ask you what your concentration was.  Thus, whether you take 6 ISP classes or 8 ISP classes you will still have an MIA or MPA degree at the end of two years, the same degree as your friend who did 6 IFEP classes.

I do not wish to imply that you should just take whatever and not worry about it.  It is definitely to your advantage to have a focused course of study, especially since you can list your courses taken on your resume and can use that list as talking points during interviews.  Nevertheless, it does mean that you should not be afraid to search outside of your concentration for classes that might make sense for you.  For example, taking a course in corporate finance or operations management can be very helpful for a number of careers, even though the former is only required for the IFEP and Energy concentrations and the latter is only required for the Management specialization.  Or, a course on the geopolitics of oil and gas can be helpful for a security concentrator who wishes to get a broader perspective on the issues that affect decision-making at the international level, even though it is an energy course.

These are just a few examples.  The overall takeaway is that your academic time at SIPA is what you make of it.  There are countless combinations of courses you could take, and it is up to you to decide how to best combine everything.  There are, of course, many people here at the school to provide guidance, so don’t worry if you don’t know exactly which classes to take right away.  There is also the add/drop period each semester where students are free to attend any class they wish for a week or two before deciding whether or not to remain in the class.  Many students take advantage of this by going to many classes at the beginning of the semester and deciding then which ones are the best fit.

Regardless of what you decide to do, do not feel that you need to pigeon-hole yourself into one track.  There is nothing wrong with taking all your courses in one area if that’s what you decide to do, but if you decide to branch out a bit you’ll be happily surprised at just how diverse the course offerings at Columbia are.

Concentration Choice

One of the questions that has been popping up in our email in box has to do with the choice of concentration at SIPA.  You can think of your concentration as your major field of study.  Many applicants are worried that they must stick with the concentration selected when the admission application was filled out.  This is not the case.  As a reminder, our six concentrations are:

  • Economic and Political Development
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Human Rights
  • International Finance and Economic Policy
  • International Security Policy
  • Urban and Social Policy

We do look for focus in an admission application and the concentration choice often will influence how a file is read.  For example, if someone selects International Finance and Economic Policy on the admission application we do look for evidence of some pretty serious quantitative study and/or work experience due to the fact that this concentration is quantitatively heavy.

However, we also realize that when admitted applicants enroll and speak with faculty, take some classes, interact with second year students, and attend events, one’s career or academic focus might shift and we want to be flexible and allow students to choose the pathway that is best for their professional goals.  Often this insight only comes after actually enrolling and spending time at SIPA.

Thus it is perfectly acceptable to change your concentration when you register for classes in the fall.  There is no formal process, you simply must choose a concentration when you register.  There is also no firm time line to finalize your choice, however the longer you wait, the more precarious completing the requirements becomes.

The counseling students receive will thus encourage you to be firm with your concentration choice sometime during your first year, and the sooner the better so that you may shape your class schedule and internships.  All of our program requirements must be completed in four semesters and deciding early will help alleviate pressure over time by narrowing your class choices.

So there is no need to worry about sticking to the concentration selected on the admission application.  During Orienation in August new students will have the opportunity to hear faculty speak about the different options and the concentration choice will be made when you register.  If you need to change again when you register for the second semester you may, but again the more focused and certain you are, the more you will be able to gain from the program.
