what will you be doing in 2014?

The deadline to apply for the Spring 2014 term is quickly approaching… It’s a week away!  If this is the right time to pursue a graduate program, then go for it.  Why wait until the fall if you can begin in the spring?  (re-read the “J-Termer Experience” post) For admissions requirements, please click here.  If you need additional time to submit last minute documents such as GRE scores or you’re waiting for the last recommender to submit her reference letter; go ahead and submit your MIA/MPA application — just be sure to contact the Admissions Office to let us know what’s on its way.

If you’re still not sure whether SIPA is the right place for you, come see us at the APSIA Admissions Forum to be held in New York (15 Barclay Street) on Tuesday, October 15th from 6pm to 8pm.  You will have the opportunity to meet with school representatives not only from SIPA but also from other reputable international affairs institutions.  It’s free to attend; you may register online through the APSIA website.  Hope to meet you along the way to a bright future at SIPA!

we would love to meet you…

Our fall recruitment season has begun.  Besides the numerous MIA/MPA information sessions held on the Columbia University campus, SIPA Admissions will be attending several graduate fairs around the country, such as the Idealist Grad Fairs and the APSIA Admissions Forums.  We are also participating in various information sessions from St. Paul, MN to Brasilia, Brazil this month.  You can find a full list of places we’ll be on our website.  We will update the schedule with additional locations when they have been finalized so check back again.

If you are interested in receiving information about our program, be sure to send us your info so we may add you to our mailing list.

On Monday, September 16th, we’re co-hosting a couple of information sessions in Minnesota and we’ll be participating in the Idealist Grad Fair held in New York at 125 West 18th Street.  Registration is free so stop by if your interested in learning more about SIPA or any of the graduate schools in attendance.

Looking forward to meeting you.

not singing Kumbaya in July

The SIPA Admissions & Financial Aid Office is still under repairs (see earlier post) and so our tiny team has been temporarily jammed inconstructionto the outer office space of two shared faculty offices on the 8th Floor of the International Affairs Building.  At first glance when you step off the elevators, you’re not sure if you’re in the right place — we appear to be a call center of sorts (the opposite of our warm and fuzzy group) in the middle of a construction site (see photo).  Howeverconstruction 2, you will still be greeted with warmth if you come by, although you probably will not hear us singing our version of Kumbaya –the Director of Financial Aid has banned us from singing while we are all sitting in close quarters; but we will share our Insomnia cookies or pastries from the Hungarian Pastry Shop (if there are any left).

So where is this going…   Just to keep you in the loop of what’s to come… We’re still making sure all our incoming students are happy and getting all the necessary information needed to prepare them for their arrival on campus for Orientation in a month .  We have set up a couple of community groups and updating the Welcome site — there has been a lot of chatter, which is always a good sign of people’s engagement and excitement.  We are also in the process of putting together our 2014 program applications; the spring MIA/MPA application will be available by late-August and the application for the MIA/ MPA/ MPA DP fall term will be available in early September.  In addition to the already planned fall trips we will make to meet you on the road at various graduate school fairs and APSIA forums, we are arranging times for you to come visit us in New York through class visits (will be offered beginning in late September after our students have settled into their classes), information sessions, and SIPA-sponsored events.

If you are thinking about graduate school, you should use this summer to research various schools and programs (because not all programs are the same — within a school there may be a few — at SIPA, we have seven), definitely invest time into searching for scholarships (every dollar helps) and you would hate to learn later you missed the deadline to apply.  We will continue to post information about fellowships opportunities that we hear about too.  And of course, plan your fall visits; make sure a stop at SIPA is on your travel itinerary — if we don’t have cookies, we’ll definitely offer you a good karma lollipop and some sound advice  :).

the clock is ticking

we’re actively reviewing applications — unfortunately, keeping you abreast of our daily activities was put on hold (not on purpose — we lost track of what day it was ).  with hopes of releasing decisions beginning on march 18th, we are  identifying all the candidates who would be a great fit at SIPA and those who we have to unfortunately turn away this year.

during our application review process, we are also evaluating candidates (who have applied by the fellowship deadline and those who have submitted the separate SIPA scholarship application) for a SIPA award/fellowship.  unfortunately, SIPA does not award as many fellowships to entering first year students as we do for our second year students.  you would think that with so little money to offer, the task of giving it away would be easy… but in reality it only makes it that much tougher because we want to give money to so many qualified applicants.  so we only hope those we admit without funding will still come and make SIPA and new york their home for at least two years.  luckily, our second year funding is much larger so the opportunity to receive a second year award is that much greater.  in the meantime, you should also check out various external scholarship sites such as the one posted on the APSIA website.

the review process continues… stay tuned…. and breathe.

APSIA Admission Forum comes to NYC on Monday

We’ll be participating at several APSIA forums this fall.  The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) comprises 34 member schools in North America, Asia and Europe dedicated to the improvement of professional education in international affairs and the advancement thereby of international understanding, prosperity, peace, and security.

Each year, APSIA sponsors forums where prospective graduate students, career advisors, and education counselors can learn about programs from officers of APSIA member schools.

In addition, you can:

  • Meet admissions officers from the professional schools of international affairs at leading universities
  • Discuss admissions requirements, common curricula, financial aid packages, joint degree programs, and career opportunities
  • Collect application information on programs of interest
  • Attend career panels featuring alumni of APSIA schools
