A Note About SIPA’s Diversity Initiative

While researching SIPA for your graduate studies, you’ve probably noticed that the school is one of the most internationally-diverse institutions at Columbia University. In fact, students in the MIA/MPA 2013 class represent 51 different countries, and speak 41 native languages. Overall, 52 percent of the class is represented by international students! Thus, we truly cherish our diversity and the many unique perspectives our students, faculty, staff and alumni bring to campus.

Reminding us all about the importance of inclusion, Dean Merit E. Janow released a statement about SIPA’s continued efforts to foster a community that is welcoming, respectful of individual and group differences, and representative of our society:

“A focus on diversity is important for all schools, but it is a particular priority for SIPA because the process of designing public policy should reflect consideration for diverse segments of societies,” Dean Janow said in a recent email.

Earlier this year Dean Janow formed a diversity task force to support SIPA’s efforts to build an even stronger culture of inclusiveness. This diversity task force holds regular meetings and student events, including an upcoming Diversity Symposium, on November 14, 2014. Technology and Policy at SIPA

You normally don’t correlate cyberspace with policy but contrary to belief, it is closely tied together.   I was reminded in a meeting today about all the great work SIPA is doing and the now many courses on the impact of technology on policy and cyber security issues.

SIPA was granted a $1 Million grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to help link academics to policymakers.  SIPA will expand its role as a key global hub for research and consultation on policy.  Drawing on Carnegie support, SIPA will promote multi-disciplinary research in the growing area of cyber policy and internet governance, drawing together faculty from across the University and engaging them with senior practitioners in both the public and private sectors around the world.

“Because cyber security has become such a highly visible problem for governments, companies, and individuals, the development of cyber policy and governance is a high priority,” said Dean Merit E. Janow.

“As the hub of global policy studies at Columbia, SIPA is well-positioned to draw upon leading thinkers at Columbia University and around the world and bring scholars and practitioners together across disciplines to generate fresh ideas and policy recommendations,” said Dean Janow.

Among other initial activities, the grant will be used to support two of SIPA’s newest scholars—Herb Lin, a senior fellow in cybersecurity, and Andrew McLaughlin, a senior fellow in technology and public policy.

SIPA Announces its 2015 Graduation Speaker

SIPA announced this week that Caroline Kennedy, the U.S. Ambassador to Japan and a 1988 graduate of Columbia Law School, will be the featured speaker at SIPA’s graduation ceremonies in May 2015.

Ambassador Kennedy, who is the first female U.S. Ambassador to Japan, was warmly received upon assuming office on November 19 of last year.

Her current position is the latest step in a life devoted to public service. She previously worked as vice chair of the board of directors and honorary director of the Fund for Public Schools in New York City and as chief executive of the Office of Strategic Partnerships of the New York City Department of Education.

Ambassador Kennedy has also served numerous nonprofit organizations, boards, and foundations, including the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

We’re looking forward to welcoming her back to Columbia this spring.

SIPA is on Instagram!

On our Admissions Blog, we love sharing deadline reminders, scholarship announcements, and Seeple profiles with you. But we realize there are more ways to connect in this digital landscape. So we are now extending our reach, and will be sharing more admissions-related info on our Facebook and Twitter feeds. (Don’t go anywhere, as there’s still plenty of information to learn from our blog!)

But that’s not all. To show you more about student life at SIPA, we are now even on Instagram! For the latest images about SIPA student life and events, follow our username @Columbia.SIPA or find us at http://instagram.com/columbia.sipa.

Applications deadlines are approaching… but you haven’t decided

Are you someone who wants to continue serving the global community but haven’t decided whether or not you should take time to complete a Master’s degree in international affairs?

I think the best thing for you to do is to talk with our students or alumni.  Learn from their experiences and imagine yourself here through their lens.  If you cannot come to New York to meet with our students, then we can send alums to you.  We have alumni in 155 countries after all.

If you just want to speak with an admissions representative, you can meet us in Chicago, Washington DC, Seattle, Portland, Kuwait City, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Ankara, Berlin and Paris.  Click here for more details about where to find us,  https://apply.sipa.columbia.edu/portal/offcampusevents.  We’ll also be in California this week with a few colleagues from Princeton, Tufts, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown… plus a handful of our alumni in San Diego (October 22) and San Francisco (October 23).  If you’re in the area, meet us for a drink and some light conversation about our programs and our communities.  See you on the road… or here on campus.

"The most global public policy school, where an international community of students and faculty address world challenges."

—Merit E. Janow, Dean, SIPA, Professor of Practice, International and Economic Law and International Affairs
